Oryx
Oryx beisa are large African
antelopes. These oryx prefer dry, near-desert conditions.
The oryx can survive without water for long periods.
Are any oryx species extinct?
The smallest species, the Arabian oryx, is
now almost extinct, and another oryx species, the
scimitar-horned oryx of the Sahara is on the endangered
list.
Facts about oryx
Oryxes live in herds of up to 60 animals.
Newborn oryx calves are able to run with the herd immediately
after birth. Both oryx males and oryx females possess
permanent, narrow, straight horns. The oryx female’s are
slightly longer and slimmer than the oryx male’s. These oryx
horns are quite lethal, and the oryx has been known to kill
lions with them. They are also the reason this animal is
sometimes called the sabre antelope.
Below are some pictures of Arabian
oryxes.
