Black Bear

A black bear is not always black in color. A black bear can be black, brown, blonde or even white. Some black bears have white chest patch.

What do you call a black bear?

A female black bear is called a 'sow' and a male black bear is called a 'boar'.  Because of this naming of black bears some people think bears (including black bears) are related to pigs, but it is not true. 

Facts about black bears and characteristics of black bears 

Most wild male black bears weigh between 125 and 500 pounds, while female black bears generally weigh between 90 and 300 pounds. The weight of a black bear depends on the age of the black bear, the season of the year, and how much food is available to the black bear.

How heavy is the heaviest black bear known?

The heaviest wild male black bear known weighed 880 pounds and the heaviest known female black bear weighed 520 pounds.  Black bears in captivity may exceed these heaviest black bear records.
